Battery blew up in my '69 today!

I have never had this happen before. I was sitting in the drive thru and shut off the car to place an order. As soon as I cranked it sounded like a shotgun went off under the hood. It blew the top half of the battery off! I ran in and got a cup of water and poured on the paint to wash off some of the acid then later after I got it home washed the entire area with baking powder mixture.

Re: Battery blew up in my '69 today!

Exact same happened to me two years ago, but while driving. My friend said "Sounded like that guy's car blew up" and as soon as my power steering went away as the motor died I sud "Uh, no, my car just blew up"

Turned out that the body shop that had just repaired front end damage mounted the voltage regulator in rubber well nuts w/o running a ground strap to the core supprt. Batt was charging @ 17+ volts.

Re: Battery blew up in my '69 today!

Nasty situation when the cells blow like that.
Quality assurance is non existent these days on anything let alone a battery full of acid.
The benefit of the older style battery tops with plugs was that you could add distilled water to keep the cell full.
Now you can't on most and the name "sealed lead acid battery" is misleading since they continue vent off the acid/water vapor during charge leaving lead cells exposed which can cause hydrogen explosions.

Just count your blessings that the hood wasn't open at the time and that you, family, passersby didn't get sprayed with acid.
Paint can be repaired, eyes can't.

Yes, overvoltage charging can make for a messy situation.

Re: Battery blew up in my '69 today!

It seems to be on the increase doesn't it. Back in the day I can only remember hearing about an exploded battery if a dead one was cooked on a charger, or some bone head reversed jumper cables when boosting one.

Never remember until the past few years hearing folks say it just blew up while driving, or starting, etc. But I can recall at least five from folks outside here right now, most while starting the car, one while downshifting at a light. Interesting that they are all muscle cars from the late 60's early 70's. But they are a mix of GM, Dodge/Chrysler and Fords so can't say its a particular charging system, I blame the batteries. A quick search here at TC brought up at least 4 with titles Battery exploded!

caps are not vented!
causes hydrogen gas to build until! BANG!!!!!!!!!
(charging batteries make hydrogen gas that needs to be vented)
get a quality battery (maintenance free).

Re: Battery blew up in my '69 today!

Can you believe, that I prevented an elderly neighbour, who was in the process of putting a marine 12V battery in his bedroom closet on a constant charge?!

Seems like he wanted to have a set up for emerg power, with an inverter hooked up to the battery, along with a constant charge going.

I quickly nixed the idea, and refused to put the battery in his bedroom closet, but he still insisted on setting it up in the basement.

I believe, as reinforced by the posts on this thread, that I did right, eh?

Re: Battery blew up in my '69 today!

I had the same mishap this summer also. Shut the car down, ran into the store with the kids, came out, turned the key and BAM ! Just like yours. Blew the top of battery into pieces. I even had 2 pieces stuck into the insulation under the hood. Good luck !

Would be interesting if both of you would post the rating - make - and age of your batteries so we can see if they are the same.
