Dash/Gauge cluster wiring ???

I'm in the process of wiring up my gauges and dash cluster. I will be using all Auto Meter gauges and a Covan dash. So I'll need to install/connect all my indicators and gauges. I do plan to retain the "idiot light" functionality to suppliment my gauges. My car is a 67 'Bird. I have attached a schematic for refference. I want to make sure I under stand how each of the 9 leads in the connector that normally attaches to the gauge cluster works. If I have anything wrong please correct me.

Pin 6 - This supplies power to the gauge cluster. I should be able to pull power for my gauges and "idiot lights" from here.

Pins 2,3,5, & 8 are all leads from sensors/switches. My understanding is thes are ground leads that are grounded when the switch or sensor closes the circuit.

Pins 1 & 4 are the turn signal leads. These are powered leads so any bulbs/leds will need to be grounded like any other light. The flasher unit supplies the power through these leads.

Pin 7 supplies the resistance/reading from the sensor in the fuel cell. This feed needs to be connected to the proper connection on my fuel level gauge.

Pin 9 - This controlls the power to any gauge lights for night driving. It also controls the dimming function from the headlight switch.

Does this sound correct ??

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Dash/Gauge cluster wiring ???

i used the wiring harness from covans to hook my autometer gauges and covans dash insert up, wiring is not my favorite thing, lol

I dont know about your pin connections but your explanations are correct.

The autometer guages will have there own sending units. I am assuming you are using electrcial guages.

Watch carefully on the fuel level gauge. Dont hook 12 volts to the sending unit terminal. It will fry the gauge.

What about your high beam indicator? It will hook up just like the turn signal lights.

Re: Dash/Gauge cluster wiring ???

Thanks prostreet. I know a few people who hooked up there fuel gauge like you mentioned. They were sad . And yes they are all electric.

As a side note. since these are pretty low current/volt circuits I would think that nothing more than 16ga wire would be needed.

Re: Dash/Gauge cluster wiring ???

Yes that is what size wire I use on all the cars that I wire,,# 16 awg wire for guages. You could use #18 awg for the blinker and high beam indictator.
