Under Hood Light Question

Can someone tell me what or how the under hood light gets turned on/off on a '69? I'm thinking about adding one to my car and I would like to know what is involved in installing one. Thanks.

Mercury switch. Here is an older thread on it - https://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=172919

By the looks of it, it's only a positive and negative (ground) connection.

Re: Under Hood Light Question

yes its the same setup as the trunk lights. Mercury bulb closes the circuit when the hood is open.

...and kinda like the light in your fridge you assume that it's off when the door is closed.

Only way to know for sure is to crawl in and close the door.

Re: Under Hood Light Question

Hey , thanks for all of the informative responses. As for mounting the light to the hood, can anyone post a pic. as to which holes to use. I recently installed hood insulation, I guess I will have to pull out a clip or 2, but I'm not sure on the mounting location. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Under Hood Light Question

So, It looks to me like if you have a ZL2 cowl hood you have to drill the holes? My GM hood has no holes in that area at all.

Re: Under Hood Light Question

I purchased the under hood light a few years ago but never installed it because I cannot positively figure out the correct location under my ZL2 hood. Perhaps the formed hood insulation has the correct location blocked off.

Re: Under Hood Light Question

Well, the AIM pretty much tells you where to drill your holes going off of the insulation fastener hole. So I guess I'll do that when my light comes. Of course it will be LED equipped. LOL.

Re: Under Hood Light Question

My preformed under hood insulation does not utilize that particular hole and masks it. But I can pull the insulation back some and see the hole. Below that is the flat panel that the light would mount to. I was expecting to see some dimples but they are not there.
One day when I have a little time I will mount the light.

Re: Under Hood Light Question

Looks like the only dimples I'm gonna see will have to come from my center punch.

Re: Under Hood Light Question

Since the ZL2 was a mid year addition, no dimples to use. That's why the AIM had "View C" added on Feb 3, '69 and states to use the lamp housing as a template for drilling required holes and has dimensions for placement of the lamp on the hood.
