68 tumbler in a 67 ignition switch

I bought the 1968 lock set recently for my 67, since the early-67 included a trunk lock that would only install sideways. Everything installed correctly, but I'm having a hell of a time getting the lock tumbler to fit into the 1967 ignition switch.

Are there any tricks to installing the tumbler? Will it even fit, or do I need a 68 ignition switch?

So it doesn't fit, as the 68 cylinder has a rounded spring-loaded button and the 67 ignition switch doesn't have a provision for that. So, to keep from having to have mismatched keys, I sawed off the black button and the round bump to make the back of the cylinder be flat. I was then able to fit it into the switch without issue.

I've got to find a paper clip and then I'll take some pics..

Some observations since making this mod:

- when I insert the key, the first position to the right is 'crank'. there is no run position, which leads me to...

- without the key in the ignition the pink wire to distributor is hot

I'm thinking the keyway is slightly different between the 67 and 68, since when I turn off the car I must go left to where the key cannot be pulled out.

What are the positions? Off-run-crank?

- turning

Re: 68 tumbler in a 67 ignition switch

Just wanted to update everyone incase they ever thought of doing this... Don't

As the picture shows, the keyway is different between 67-68 in addition to the other part you see cut off. The installation of the 68 tumbler puts the ignition switch in RUN with the key out. I've since put the proper '67 tumbler in. The whole problem started when I found I had a late '67 trunk panel - The resto houses don't sell matching key sets for late-67's If anyone knows of one, please let me know.

Re: 68 tumbler in a 67 ignition switch

I have the opposite problem...I bought a new lock set last year because my '67 came with 4 different keys (doors, glove box, trunk, ignition). The new set has two keys, one for door/ignition and the other for trunk/glove box. It turns out that the previous owner rewired the car using a '68 harness, and my new '67 ignition cylinder wouldn't fit into the '68 switch.

I just left the old ignition cylinder in place, and went from 4 keys down to 3. Then I added a locking gas cap. Back up to 4 keys again...
