Headlights flickering

I have a 69 withall new AAW classic update wiring. With the car off I have headlights. When I have the car running the headlights wil speratically flicker. Some times they go out for several seconds. Others just a flash. I have rechecked, tightened, star washered grounds off of the headlights. I have good ground batt to body, subframe to body and ground to engine. They only flicker while running. Otherwise they work on/off as they should. I even replaced the headlight switch. Where else do I need to check ground or anything else? Could the alt be bad? It has an internal regulator.

Have you checked the bright light switch?

Re: Headlights flickering

Yep - I'd suggest having a close look at the dimmer switch connections. As the AAW Classic Update kit includes a new headlight and dimmer switch (you did use them, didn't you?), it's unlikely to be the switch, but there may be a loose connection.
Otherwise, you've checked the ground straps, so maybe there is a damaged wire inside the insulation somewhere on the headlight circuit.

Re: Headlights flickering

Bad alternator will do it. Does the flicker change with speed?

Yes it does at times. In answer to the other helps posted. The hi/lo beam switch does not come into play. I do not have that. I installed and Ididit column with hi/lo button in the turn signal. That wire is clipped right now. With that column AAW sends a hi/lo beam modubox. And that has been changed twice.

Re: Headlights flickering

The flickering only happens when the car is running. It's fine when still (not running).

OK, if by that you mean the lights flicker with the engine running, but not when the engine is NOT running, then your alternator may be suspect, like Steiner said. When the engine is not running, the lights will draw power direct from the battery. Have you had any low voltage issues with the battery since the flickering began, as this would also indicate an undercharge problem?

No Tim, by my guage it seems to be running just under or at 14. But yes the flickering is only when the engine is running.

Re: Headlights flickering

If only when running I would be suspect of Voltage Regulator and or Alternator. Both can be bench tested.

Re: Headlights flickering

If it changes some with speed, bad diode in the rectifier allowing AC to ride on the alternator output. Higher alt speed, faster flicker from higher frequency.

Re: Headlights flickering

I have an internal voltage reg in the alt. I do believe the flickering was faster as my speed increased. I bet the people ahead of me were freaking thinking the cops or someone was after them. I guess I need to go alt shopping.

Re: Headlights flickering

Check your battery connection real good too. The battery filters some of that out. Had a side post rot out once and lights started flickering, then the alt ate it.

Re: Headlights flickering

Ok update still no fix at this time. I called Ididit and they sent me a new turn signal lever with the hi/lo beam switch in it. Possibility that the wire was chafed inside the column shorting things out.

I changed the hi/lo beam switch. Turned the lights on. Ok. Use the hi/lo beam switch. Ok. Started the car and the headlights would flicker and go off. I tried this several times. As soon as I would shut off the car the headlights would come back on. So have I narrowed it down to it being a bad alt? I have also changed out the headlight on/off switch. And the AAW modubox.

What 3 wire alt are you guys running? Anyone using a 140 amp alt? Do you have a part number for it? Are you running a specific brand alt? I would like a 140 amp, chrome 3 wire alt.

Re: Headlights flickering

Reads like you have a bad regulator inside the alternator case.
Run engine, turn on lights, unhook red wire on BATT stud, lights stop flickering? I bet they do.

Is your sense wire tight at the other end connection, meaning opposite end of the alt connection? Same with excite wire?

Look in Summit catalog for a simular chromie and go from there.
