One wire alternator

If you install a one wire alterator, is there a wire harness available, so you still can use your factory gauges (idiot light)?

Thumbs down Re: One wire alternator

You can not run an 'IDIOT' light with a 1-wire

If you do it and I fix it for you before Dec. that will make at least three (3) 1-wire systems I will have corrected this year ...

Go to MAD Electrical site ( madelectrical.com ) and read about alternators in the 'Electrical Tech' section

A well installed and nicely wired modern system will easily outperform any 1-wire out there and still look 'trick'

Re: One wire alternator

I run a 1 wire alternator but I got it cheap. It was chrome and new. The previous one was also a 1 wire.

But John is right, a 3 wire system is better. A 1 wire alternator is fine for a tractor or a car that sees a lot of time at the strip. Cars at the strip also get put on a charger frequently.

My car does not get driven much, so I figure what I have is fine for now.

Re: One wire alternator

The pros and cons of 1 wire 2 wire 3 wire and how to wire in each in many older posts.
From memory, the 1 wire is not recommended.

Re: One wire alternator

Guys, thanks. On my 71, I ran a one wire and it solved many electrical issues I was having at the time. I have had no issue with the one wire I installed a few years ago. My sons 69 however does not have any of the issues that I was having on my 71 and during cleanup of his engine bay, we were only looking to upgrade, to have something a bit more shiny. We will look for a 3 wire that is chrome. I will also look at the older posts to get a better understanding of why the 3 wire is so much better? Again, the 1 wire was the solution on my 71; The 69 wiring seems to be in much better condition, however.
Again thank you so much for your prompt/informative feedback; Take care.

That is fair comment... if one runs a low idle speed, or has low final gear ratios then start driving in the rain , or at night, heater fans etc, with extra current dsraw.....the 1 one is not as efficient at low rpms....
With the tenacy towards overdrive gears, and with that combing with low rear gear ratios, due to the lower 1st and 2nd gears in the od trans...results in very low cruise rpms

the single wire is not suitable for these conditions
If one has a choice go for the 3 wire....if have a single and not having issues due to the above....why fix something thats not broke?.
