Unhappy What happened ? after gauge install.

About two weeks ago or so I installed console gauges and a tach in my 69. The car ran great before I did this. After some help from Everrett all gauges and the tach worked fine. I took the car for a run and all was well. It has sat ever since. I went to start it today and I've got nothing. Not even a click. The battery has been on a tender and has plenty of juice.
Where should I start looking?

Look in the fuse panel for any blown fuses.

Re: What happened ? after gauge install.

You say you have nothing. Is that only when you try to start it? Does your headlights work, horn or nothing works.

Try testing voltage with a meter or test light from the battery, then the horn relay, then thru the fuse block.

Thanks for getting back. I'm not too good at explaining. I get nothing from the starter.
The battery is fine, all the lights work, interior and exterior.Horn works and what idiot lights I left in the dash all still work. The new amp meter works when I put any drain on the system (lights etc.)

Re: What happened ? after gauge install.

Is it a auto or 4 speed? Power goes from the ignition switch on the top of the steering column to the neutral safety switch then to starter. Have you check for power on the purple wire on the starter?

Have you tried moving the shifter while trying to start it?

Mike, now it gets confusing. The car started with an auto on the tree. Someone put in a console auto in with what looks like the correct harness. I put in a TK600 and bypassed the purples with a relay so the neutral saftey switch and back up lights work.
I did also shake the shifter. Also the TKO and the starter are new and only have about 400 miles on them.

Re: What happened ? after gauge install.

Does it still have the ignition switch on top of the column? You need to make sure you have 12 volts at the fuse block. Then at the purple on the ignition switch.

You say you have relays on the purple wires. When you turn the ignition key does the relay with the purple wires click. Is voltage going thru the 2 purple wires on the relay?

Mike, Thanks again, I'll start there and get back to you. I'm not an electrical guru but I can follow well. Thanks again.

Re: What happened ? after gauge install.

Mike, I'm back... I found it BUT............................................ The purple had current but the relay did not. I had put an inline fuse in so the relay wouldn't burn. I put a new fuse in and when I tried to start it, it blew the new fuse. Where to next? Joe

Re: What happened ? after gauge install.

Mike back again... I took all the wires off the relay and put them back on and that did it.
I must have ground something when I put the console back together. But because you had me follow the purple I was able to find it. Thanks again, I don't know what I would do without this site.

Re: What happened ? after gauge install.

Joe,

Glad you found it. When a fuse directly blows like that it is usually grounded or a wire is shorted out.

You might check the power/control wire for the relay to make sure its not cut anywhere and will ground out again.
