Technically, it already is a voltmeter. It is not the old style ammeter that runs full system current through the gauge. The small leads connect to each side of the charge wire going from the alternator output point on the bus bar to the battery, essentially making it a shunt. Alt voltage higher pushing current to battery, needle deflects to charge. Battery voltage higher pushing current to electrical system, needle deflects to discharge.
