Amp Meter Test?

The console amp meter in my car isn't working and I'd like to know if there is a way to test it before I buy a replacement. I assumed I can connect a multi-meter to the leads, but am not sure what I should be looking for in terms of current. Anyone have some advice? Thanks

Do a search on bench testing gauges. I cant search with my phone app but both Everett and I responded with troubleshooters for all four gauges. I'll search when I get back to station H.

Re: Amp Meter Test?

Take DMM and place in lowest OHMS position.
Touch meter leads to terminals and ammeter should deflect in one direction.
Reverse meter leads and ammeter should deflect in opposite direction.
Maybe full scale defection only for a half second or so.

Re: Amp Meter Test?

If the gauge is responding to your tests then trace the wire to the bulkhead connector on the firewall and test continuity on both sides of the connector, most likely you have a disconnect behind the fuse box or on the engine side of the connector, or from the fuse box side to the gauge in the harness or connector.

If good connection there follow up to the radiator shroud to the horn relay and make sure lead is connected, and then the other goes over to the junction block behind the battery. Diagram attached in PDF format.
