Troubleshooting horn

Horn doesn't work, hasn't since I've owned the car. Brand new horn relay and headlight harness.

If I power the horns directly they work fine.
If I jump the horn wire on the relay to the big black or red wires on it, the horns work.

If I ground the buzzer wire, it buzzes, if I ground the relay wire, it clicks.

Any ideas?

Re: Troubleshooting horn

The black wire from the steering column, the horn button, provides a ground energizing the horn relay.
Testing the relay would require a jumper from ground to the black wire terminal.
Relay energizes horn works, bad wire or ground spot under the horn button.
Black wire, between the gray wire and dark blue wire. also goes through the steering column connector and through firewall connector.

Scott,

Can you clarify? It's a new rag joint as I converted to power steering but I don't remember there being a ground wire or anything on it.

Re: Troubleshooting horn

The strap(s) with the bolts transfer the current path across the rag joint.

Thanks I'll take a look but I don't think that's it since it's brand new.

Re: Troubleshooting horn

well that was easy. I thought the switch behind the steering wheel was just that, a switch that went on and off. I didn't realize the power ran through it and completed the circuit when you press the horn button. I jumped a wire from the button to ground and the horn works.

Re: Troubleshooting horn

Cool! Yes, power does run through the black wire.
