"GEN" light comes on when I turn on the radio (69)

(1969),..When I turn on the factory AM radio it no longer works, and, the Generator (dummy) light immiediately comes on. When I turn the radio to 'off' the GEN light goes of.

Any ideas?

Re: "GEN" light comes on when I turn on the radio (69)

Hi, gen light turns on when voltage is too high or too low. The radio doesn't work so it may be shorting out the electrical and causing irregularity in voltage and the light turns on bit not blowing any fueses...

Get a new radio?

There's no doubt easier ways to troubleshoot it but...
I don't know how much current a '69 AM radio draws, but being the troubleshooter I am I'd rig a DMM up to display how much current it draws when you turn it on. And also what's on the 12V and ground wires. It's a pain to do but it'll tell you something.
Or rig in some other radio (just the 12V and GND wires) to power it up and see what happens.
That'll tell you if it's truly the radio that's at fault.

Think of the light bulb as the radio. Put the DMM in series on the 12VDC wire to the radio and set the DMM to milliamps.

Could be a dead short in the radio or the harness.

Unplug the power connector the radio and plug in a test light.
Does the same action happen?
If it does, then perform HwyStarJoe's auggestion - Nice picture BTW.
If nothing happens, bad radio.
