updating alternator on 68 camaro but not sure how to wire new one in

i got car as a roller and installed a 350 motor and 700r4 trans. apparently the car has an external voltage regulator in harness, but i want to upgrade to using a later model alt. w/internal voltage reg as I already have it .my question is how do i wire new one in and what do i do with old external voltage reg and wiring after its in. im thinking new one is one wire setup but i noticed it also has the 2 wire plug that goes into it as well.what do i do to correctly wire in new one so it works correctly? any sugestions? thanks in advance

i will post pics when i figure out how

Visit Mad Electrical or Lectric Limited for conversion harness, or search here for home made shunts to install on the existing Voltage Regulator harness and alter the plug on the Alternator lead. Basically you make two "U's" outside to outside and inside to inside if I remember right.

And remove the blue & white wires from the existing alt plug, wrap each in shrink tubing, and plug the blue wire into #1 terminal, and white into #2 terminal.
Or you can buy an adapter for 10DN to 10SI.

Thanks Everett I though that was the case with the alt plug but was holding my tongue for confirmation for an authority.

Re: updating alternator on 68 camaro but not sure how to wire new one

Or you can go to AAW web site and buy an upgrade harness for about 120.00 and get rid of all the wires you don't need, It's a plug and play harness that looks factory and has all the right plugs on it. They can make it for a updated electronic distributor ( HEI or Coil set up ) this will give you a full 12 v hot wire. I put one on my car, looks great and fit perfect .

This kit makes it pretty simple. A conversion harness for the plug on the back of the alternator and the connector that plugs in where the regulator was.

Re: updating alternator on 68 camaro but not sure how to wire new one

Not trying to steal the thread, but have a question about my old alternator. I forget what the date code is right now, but it is a 37 Amp alternator. Is it foolish to keep this on a "performance" engine with MSD distributor and 6AL box, with not much else for it to power. Wasn't sure if that small of an alternator would be detrimental at all. I don't have electric cooling fans.
Thanks for input.

Re: updating alternator on 68 camaro but not sure how to wire new one

All the above is assume an 'si' style alternator. We assume you do not have a CS130 style.

I didn't want to hack my harness too bad so I did this:

D1SC, pump gas, street car, Water/Meth injection

I did it like that too, but did it inside my VR after I removed all of it's internals. Looks totally untouched.

With my MSD 6al box and electric fuel pump my 37A alternator was fine....then added the twin fans and not good...still ran fine, but the FP would go up and down with motor RPM.

Re: updating alternator on 68 camaro but not sure how to wire new one

How do I tell the difference between a CS130 and a 10 or 12SI?

Sorry to bump an old thread but I pulled my old alternator a few minutes ago in preparation for the new one coming in tomorrow.
