dash goes crazy when I turn on headlights

My original 67 camaro is driving me crazy (no pun intended). When I switch on my headlights it causes my gas gauge to immediately indicate less fuel than I actually have. Also both blinker indicators in the dash will light, and then remain steadily lit, simultaneously as well as my brights indicator will be lit even though my headlights are not set on bright.

As soon as I shut off my headlights, then everything returns back to normal....

Any ideas?

I would read the "sticky" at the top of this forum. It helped me sort out mine

Two things come to mind. Either the headlight switch is bad or you have a bunch of bad grounds. I am leaning to the bad grounds. Check them all.

Re: dash goes crazy when I turn on headlights

while I was troubleshooting my dash lights 2 weeks ago I encountered all of the above when the center screw was removed from the dash cluster causing it to become ungrounded so that's my best guess.

Pull the steering wheel, unbolt the 3 nuts holding the column up and remove your instrument panel cluster.

I bet you'll find your cluster is not grounding well. You can bench test the lights on your dash by looking at them from the back of the cluster...

On the circuit board, top right where the connector goes there are 3 leads...the left most one powers the dash lights. Put 12v there and then connect ground to the metal housing that the high beam indicator snaps into. Does it work? If not, you've got a bad ground. In my case, the metal housing around the gauges was really scaley/rusty and I had to sand it all down. It then made a good ground and everything worked as expected.

Re: dash goes crazy when I turn on headlights

Thanks for inputs. Since I didn't know exactly where to start, I began by pulling all the fuses and lightly cleaning the clips that hold either end of the fuses and then sprayed electric cleaner spray. It didn't help at all. That definitely causes me to think your posts are probably accurate concerning loose connections. I'll follow your advice and if I find out the solution I'll post it.

Re: dash goes crazy when I turn on headlights

Blue89bird, it turned out that was my problem. I took your advice and removed the instrument panel. I then cleaned all the screws as well as the upper center screw position that contains the wire ground loop, and wallah! everything was back to normal. Thanks everyone for all the help, that "big" problem turned out to be a small fix.
