Fuse box question

Does anyone know where these two, gray and red wires, come from on my fuse box? I am installing a tachometer and read that I can use these pigtail connections to run my power from my tachometer so I was wondering if they serve any important function. The red top wire has been disconnected.

Re: Fuse box question

Those appear to be OE style connections, so we could use some more info to help. What factory options does the car have, and what does it have that does not work (because you said the red wires are disconnected.

Gray is often used for lighting, and being hooked to the ACC spade, the circuit would be something that only draws power with the key turned. The reds being on the BAT terminal is a circuit getting full time power, like a clock.

I'll have to look at the tach - center fuel gauge option, to see where the separate tach harness plugged into. It would just be helpful to know what's in the car now, to see if you can get something working that currently doesn't, plus get you juice for the tach.

Re: Fuse box question

You can piggy back off the red spare connector as that is a factory style use one get one to use later connector. Eric is right through better to know what options are running so you don't overload one particular circuit.

Re: Fuse box question

It's not where they come from it's where the go to.

The red is Bat Constant power to who know and the grey is switched power. It was not done at the factory.

My guess would be someone added an accessory or maybe used it to power an aftermarket radio or something

Re: Fuse box question

Probably powers the radio if you have one since the oe fuse for radio is missing. Unless it's being fed by the red wire jammed behind the heater fuse!!! I'd seriously look at my wiring before hooking up a tach.

Re: Fuse box question

Those three tabs in the center of the fuse box are: 1. Constant 12v (ie. battery) 2. Ignition (keyed) and 3. Accessories. I'm not sure of the order, but it"s marked on the fuse box. I just used a volt meter to verify which was which. I believe they are for adding electrical components later. You didn't say what tach you are installing, so you should go by the instructions for which power to hook to. Some electrical items need constant, keyed and a light power hookup.
Good luck,
John

Re: Fuse box question

There is a radio all though its not working. I didnt install it. There is no oe tachometer in the car, but I am installing an aftermarket Autometer. The red wire jammed in the upper right is from a previous owner for the light in a oil pressure gauge. There is a clock but it doesnt work.

Re: Fuse box question

On your tach hook-up, you can solder together the tach inst light with the power lead and plug the power lead into the ACC spade on the fuse panel as it is open fro the picture. You could even get a spade splitter and move the red wire for the oil gauge light to ACC spade.

If OE or aftermarket radio, turn on the unit. If its dash lights up good, crank up the volume to listen for 'white noise' from the speakers. If good, you're close. Is the antenna lead connected? Turn volume down first.

You should try out every electrical accessory and list here the circuits not working.

Re: Fuse box question

Oe clock is not working, oe radio is not working and not lighting up. Also no white noise. Gray wire is to oe clock light when its unplugged light on clock goes out. OE red wire to battery connection unplugged...wipers work, exterior lights work, dome works. Anything left to check? Engine Stuff?

I would pull the reds completely. The gray should not go to the clock light. The clock light come off the dash lights so it's dimmable. So I'm guessing the clock light is on any time the ignition switch is on.

I assume your looking for switched 12v for your tach. You can just plug it into the terminal where the gray wire is now.

Re: Fuse box question

No it comes on with ignition, looks like red wire might have powered the clock too. I disconnected both. Now I have to figure where to hook the light wire from the aftermarket tach. I was told lps terminal on fuse box but it doesnt work. Fuse is fine.

Is the light a standard bulb or LED?
