Distributer Location?

GM HEI distributer, 454. The timing mark is on dead center with the #1 piston at the top. Where should the rotor be pointing? I always thought it should be pointing to the #1 piston. While reading the service manual it showed it pointing to #2, 45 degree to the right from the front center of the engine. Which is correct?

Re: Distributer Location?

Most are pointing #1 cylinder.
You can place the firing order in any one of eight starting positions as you chose.
Does the picture appear to be backwards?

Re: Distributer Location?

Depends on which stroke #1 is on. The timing mark on the damper will indicate the #1 piston being at TDC twice on a 4 stroke engine. Once at the beginning of the firing stroke and once at the beginning of the intake stroke.

I understand what both of these terms mean but others may not. I say it should be pointed at the number one plug wire, or number 1 on the cap.
