Ohm help

Ohm reading on a new plug wire is 4.45 on 20k setting. Thus 4,400 ohms... correct? I test the old plug wire it wil read .260 to start then start reading erratic! New batteries in multi meter! Not cheap multi meter. I take the old plug wire and start moving it with the leads still connected and the meter jumps from .014 to 19.xxx. I take the new plug wire and do the same thing and the meter stays put.

I'm asking because I have 1 cylinder that the exhaust was cooler than the rest. Therefore leading me to believe that the spark was not there! Then I started testing all the plug wires. At first I couldn't get a read on the wire at all thinking I had an opening in it. Once I removed it, I was able to get a reading.

Bad wire? Correct?

Re: Ohm help

I thought 4,400 ohms sounds good for a average length, original style suppression wire. dont know how the meter would start reading almost zero resistance by moveing the wire?
Got to have bad end connectors?
19k way to high...

Re: Ohm help

Bad wire/cable, correct.
The erratic reading may be due to the meter averaging function.
Also, the lead-to-surface contact. every surface is not smooth as you look under a microscope, hills and valleys.
As a lead is slid across a surface, a new contact point is made from the last one, and the meter averages out again.

Another tip is when holding or clamping work against the meter lead/probe, don't touch the work/lead ends, human body/skin resistance is added in parallel to the work being measured.
Proof in point: moisten each index finger and thumb of each hand and hold a lead in each hand. Meter reads resistance. If holding an item for measuring in the same fashion, the resistance of the skin is taken into measurement along with the load being measured.

I have Fluke 70 series, 73, 75, and 77 at home for usage.
I have a Harbour Freight meter, catch on sale for $5, in every vehicle glovebox for on the road. If stolen, not a big expense.

Re: Ohm help

To add to that, you may be chasing a problem that you may not have. I have a small block that ran with #6 cyl 40 degrees cooler than rest. I pulled my hair out troubleshooting only to find out from my engine builder that it's normal.

Re: Ohm help

Thanks for the input guys. I went ahead and replaced all the plug wires. I'll come back and let you know what outcome was. The new wires all had less resistance than the old ones. But the old ones weren't bad except for that one.
