Iginition key plug does not go all the way in

I am completely rewiring my car and now am working on the dash harness. I tired to plug in the inginition switch plug and it will not go in all the way. So I pulled it out again same problem. So then I took the key tumble out no problem, but can't get the lock ring out. I was pulling it out so it would be easier to see where it is binding but no luck. Is there any trick to get the new inginition plug to go in all the way in ?

Re: Iginition key plug does not go all the way in

What year ? 69 & newer has a rectangular hole on the inner part that has to fit over a rectangular "pin" inside the column. If these are not lined up properly what you're describing will be the result. You simply put the key in and turn the lock back & forth as you install it and it should go. If you have a 67 or 68 I'm not sure what could be the problem but IIRC those years the lock cylinder goes in with the switch in the accessory position. Or are you referring to the electrical plug ? On those there are plastic "barbs" that have to fit through square holes on the outer edges of the ignition switch.
