replacing ignition switch

i read a few posts already after i unscrewed the chrome nut and ring and pulled switch out.
from what i read this is not supposed to pull out? leave in and do the paper clip?

putting the paperclip in and turning ccw isn't doing a thing but pissin my dog off

if i screw the ring back on, it doesnt appear to make a difference if its on or off while paper clipping and turning ccw.

i'm ready to take a cutoff wheel to this B-tch<~ just sayn

Re: replacing ignition switch

That's the way you do it. Make sure you push the paper clip all the way in.

Re: replacing ignition switch

Put the key in the acc position. insert the paper clip in the hole. you should feel a resistance pushing back when you push all the way in. While its pushed in continue to turn the key ccw past the acc position. The lock cylinder should then pop out or be easily pulled out with the key. I just did this to one I have laying around to be sure.

Re: replacing ignition switch

I just pulled one off, did all the correct things in the procedures above, but the cylinder was gummed up and real sticky which I found out after grabbing the big ignition switch piece behind the dash and giving it a few yanks and twists and finally it popped out.

Did you install the diode on the alternator wire as instructed?

If not the engine will continue to run when the key is switched off.

Re: replacing ignition switch

well that this post is off topic now or i just started off topic...
On page 8 of my MSD 6420 install .pdf., it says to install diode from terminal 4 (of regulator) to "charging light". huh?
wouldn't this be the positive line i have connected to my battery connect?

what the heck is the charging light? did i get ripped off and not have any cool lights on my msd? there's no mention but here that i see "charging light".

anyway, i ordered a few diodes thanks to a search here.

thanks for the help, and i'll report back

I think it refers to the idiot light in the dashboard which on my car is one of the wires connected to my alternator.
