Temp light has 2 wires

So I have my gauge cluster out and testing everything. All bulbs are good, everything lights up when using 12v power & ground.

When I plug it into the car all lights work also except the temp light.
Brake light comes on when e brake is pressed
GEN light on with key
Oil light on with key
blinkers work
headlight turns on back lighting

So the only one that isn't working is the TEMP light and I noticed there are 2 green wires coming out of the connector. This serves as a ground so I plugged in my volt meter to the power #1 slot and put the negative in the 2 green wire slot and nothing happens.

Can someone tell me where the green wires go and why there are two?

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

One green goes to the ignition switch, one to the temp switch. I think temp light test may come on with key in start position?

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

yeah it should but doesn't. No ground on these green wires.
And this is the one light I wanted to work out of all of them....

Ground the sender lead on the engine block and start the car. Should light.

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

The sender is installed should be on the drivers side by below the exhaust manifold. Or it could be by the upper radiator hose outlet or actually in the upper connection. If it is missing and the lead is just hanging or taped up you have your answer why its not working.

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

Ok found it right by upper rad hose and grounded it. It then lit up the light.
So that means my sender is bad?

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

If I understand correctly the 2 wires coming the from the harness goes to ignition and one goes to the sending unit.

but the light should come on by just turning the key on and that has nothing to do with the sending unit. Sending unit only triggers it when it's too hot.

Am I right?

So the light doesn't come on when I turn the key which means the green wire going to the ignition has an issue.... ?

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

It's just a switch. The switch is open when the engine is cold, so it shouldn't come on. On a 69 the light should come on for a bulb test when cranking (start) as was said - assume 68 should be the same. If it doesn't I'd suspect the ign switch.

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

Yes it is just a switch - off then at high temp on. You can bench test it. in a pot of boiling water but it sounds like the rest of the circuit is working.

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

Well the issue is the light never comes on. Key in start position, key on and engine cranking, etc. but as long as I know it will come on if the motor gets too hot and it looks to be the case now. Hopefully i never see the light come on.

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

does it light then go off while the key is in the run position before starting?

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

No, never lights up but did when I tested the circuit board.
I'm getting a new board tomorrow at classicindustries among some other things. This board is on its last leg. I'll do some more testing then. If it still doesn';t work then the 2nd green wire that goes to the ignition has some issue but I'm not going to worry about it. Eventually I will get gauges instead of just lights.

Re: Temp light has 2 wires

On my 67 I just went through this. I dont have gauges. My light would not go on. I found the wire under the hood and grounded it. It lit the light when the switch was in run. I hooked it back up to a new temp sender to solve that part. But I also remembered from 20 years ago that it used to light also when I turned the ignition switch to the cranking position, as a bulb test. This was not happening anymore. I replaced the ignition switch with a new one and sure enough, the bulb check now works. So, my problem was the ignition switch.
