Dash Harness Ground

Had to install new dash harness in the '68 as the the old one was hacked up to much to feel safe using. Question is, where does the ground wire attach? Old one was frayed and not attached to anything.

Re: Dash Harness Ground

If I recall, there is a metal tab on the back of the dash holder that grounds to the cars body, however it can be hit or miss and not reliabel so many folks run an actual ground wire and secure it to a screw or bolt to the cars body.

I'm sure someone will correct me if my memory is fuzzy, but I think I am remembering correct.

Re: Dash Harness Ground

Just find a bolt or screw where the dash carrier attaches to the metal dash frame skeleton.

Re: Dash Harness Ground

Hi Kev
I could not find a pic right now, I borrowed one.
There is a Dash Support (in Red Circle in my Pic) that runs from the front upper section of the Firewall/ top of the Dash to the lower section I believe to the Left of where the Ash Tray is, it also has the Clip for the Turn Signal Flasher.
There is a Screw Hole, that is where the one of the Dash Harness Grounds was for my Car.
There were like at least 3 or 4 for the Dash I think, One at the Support, (Top for Instrument Lights ? ) and one that goes to the Underside of the Dash to the Left of the Headlight Switch and one from the Headlight Switch to that same ground.

Some info and pics on one of my Posts

Re: Dash Harness Ground

Thanks for the help. Out of curiosity, is there a spot in one of the manuals that shows this so i do not continue to ask this kind of question?

Re: Dash Harness Ground

The assembly manual IMHO is extremely lacking in much help on anything, more of a guide, the pictures kinda show ya where stuff goes but no real details. Plus doesn't seem to be any real ryhme or reason on how it's layed out to finding anything without thumbing through the whole book to find something.

I'm still trying to figure out where the dang lil rubber spacers go in the guage assembly for mine.

Yes. I thought that i may have been missing something. Just trying to put it back correctly and without any problem later on with the ground as i know they can sometimes be tricky and a headache.

Hi Kev
like Scott said, I would be " thumbing " thru the AIM and sticking Sheets in as Bookmarks. Had trouble finding the things I thought should have been normally grouped together, Like All the Power Brake stuff with the Manual Brake stuff.

Saw about Midway thru there is another index for the "Optioned Stuff"
that was not a part of a standard Camaro build.

Wished I knew about that like a year ago.
Have fun

Re: Dash Harness Ground

Have another question/problem. On the OLD harness the headlamp switch connector has one more port than the NEW one has from American Autowire. It has a ground wire attached to it. What give? AAW says this did not happen until 1970, however another 1968 I looked at had the OLD style connector. Is this ground not needed? Not sure how to post a picture. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Dash Harness Ground

I should add that the top one is the Original and the bottom is the new harness.
The connection I have the question about is at the very top on the top one.

Re: Dash Harness Ground

Does the "top" connection mate up with the optional ground "tab" on the metal frame portion of the headlamp switch?

Re: Dash Harness Ground

Are you certain that connector is original and not spliced in?

1967 RS driver with a 327/210... but now with an M20, HEI, AAW harness w/ halogens and relays, Dakota Digital, Moto-Lita, TMI interior, and a few other toys

Re: Dash Harness Ground

Yes the connector is original as I did see the same connector on another Z28 yesterday. Yes the connector does mate up to the pin on the outside of the switch and goes to ground. Can I just wire my switch to ground with a single plug connector off the old harness since the New one did not come with the same set-up? Hope my explanation makes sense to everyone.
