single filament bulbs to function as both park/turn signals

we are working on a 69. the side marker lights are single filament bulbs and are only used for park or running lights (as we all know). we are trying to use them as signal lights also.
we found this diagram, from another website, that uses 2 diodes to supposedly allow what we are trying to acomplish. but it doesn't work, not for us. because, if the park light has power then it will not flash when the signal light power is applied. all that happens is the light stays lit. other people say it works for them.

as a side note, we have had both park/signal lights working with the use of three relays BUT the park lights would have to always be on when the car is running. (and we want them on only when the headlights are on).

Re: single filament bulbs to function as both park/turn signals

Chris,

If you want the simple route, simply disconnect the ground wire of the side marker lamp from chassis ground, and then splice it into the turn signal wire coming into the turn/park socket. This is what GM started doing in 1971. This will only work correctly if you keep standard incandescent bulbs as it is using the filament as a ground path.

Years ago I drew up a schematic that allows a "full function" side marker without having to worry about keeping incandescent bulbs if you upgrade to all LEDs or bulbs start to burn out. It's a simple "logic" circuit made from discrete components. You may omit the fuses. The only revision I've made is installing some .01 uF @ 200v automotive grade capacitors from the turn signal input to ground and marker light input to ground to shunt transients to ground before the circuit.

first off your awesome! thank you!
and yeah...we noticed that. but problem is we are not using the turn/park bulb anymore. Seems we would have to run the dual filament park/turn bulb to make that work.

and just to clarify, this is not a factory setup we are using. We're not using the factory front park/signal housing anymore. we are only using a single filament bulb (194) at the front turn signal and side marker and only have room for that (small) bulb, not the big dual filament bulb, in the NEW front turn signal housing.

your schematic is very kickass!!! we re-drew(?) it on a program called iCircuit and it worked perfectly. we were going to use 3 relays for the front and 3 relays for the rear to make this work, (we already had it built), but now we will see just how small we can build your setup since we will need 4 of them. circuit board or no circuit board? hmmmm. We're thinking we might fit it all inside some 1/2'' heat shrink.
thank you once again!!!!!!!

Re: single filament bulbs to function as both park/turn signals

i guess we didnt see this at first, but this circuit will not power two bulbs. is there any way to add another bulb to this circuit?

we're asking because we are using the small 194 bulbs in both front and side signal/park lights.

Re: single filament bulbs to function as both park/turn signals

this is the only way we can see to add another bulb. simply by repeating your diagram and connecting them together. and we would need the same setup for the other side. Or is there another way?
