1969 Camaro Auto headlights off solution??

Hi,

Anyone come up with a solution that would turn the headlights off automatically after the car ignition is off like the newer cars?

Thanks,

Joe

Re: 1969 Camaro Auto headlights off solution??

The simplest solution I can think of is a relay set up off the ignition power. Ignition comes on, sends power to the headlght switch so you can turn them on or off. Ignition off, no power to the headlights. If you want to get fancy you could grab a DEI relay used on remote starters etc for the turbo cool down. You can adjust how long the power stays on..

Thanks I will look into this DEI relay option. How many amps do you think the headlights pull?

Thanks,

Joe

Are you just looking to shut down the power to the headlights when the engine is off as protection from leaving the lights on accidently?

Initially I just wanted to make sure I don't forget to turn my headlights and/or parking lights off when I turn off the ignition. But if I can have the lights shut off after say 30 seconds that would be much better. On the 69 Camaro the main power to the headlight switch also powers the dome light so having the power turn of after 30 seconds would not leave me in the dark in the car after the ignition is turned off.

I left my parking lights on the other day and it killed the battery which started me thinking about what I could do to avoid this problem in the further.

Re: 1969 Camaro Auto headlights off solution??

All,

Just a quick update, I have ordered a DEI RELAY MODULE PULSE TIMER NEW 528T off of Ebay for $11.49 should be here in a couple days. Looks pretty simple to install. I will let everyone know the results once I get it wired up.

Thanks again,

Joe

So, your headlights will only stay on for 30 seconds with they key in the off position?

You can try that but I don't think its what you want. You need a time delay de-energize relay. This is a link to an automotive relay that should do what you want.

Hummm, I guess I will see but the information on this was:

The 528T module is a timer-controlled relay which temporarily connects or disconnects circuits for up to 60 seconds, so you can customize your alarm system to allow several applications to trigger in a timed sequence or to allow features like delayed arming. The 528T Pulse Timer module can even provide a "wait-to-start" trigger for remote starting diesel vehicles. The 528T features an adjustable timer up to 60 seconds with a built-in 15A relay. The pulse timer can be trigger by a positive or negative pulse.

Thumbs up Re: 1969 Camaro Auto headlights off solution??

You might want to read this from the relay vendor. They explain it very well.

TXSGAMBER,

Have you used one of these relays before for this? I found this comment on a review of this relay. Seems this person could not get this to relay to work with the ignition switch. Don't know if this is a user error or an issue with this relay. Read review section...
