Rear light wiring harness wrapping ???

I am curious as to what other people's original rear lighting wiring harnesses are wrapped in?

My original harness has a black plastic sheath around the main length of the harness with everything branching off of it wrapped in black cloth tape.....I have a replacement harness from American Auto Wire and everything on it is wrapped with the black cloth tape. No plastic sheath!

So I am wondering if this black plastic sheath on my original harness is original or if someone added this before I owned the car. There is no black cloth tape under the black plastic sheath.

Someone messed with my original harness before I owned the car. They spliced in a connector for trailer hitch wiring (of all things!). And for some reason, the connector for the under dash courtesy light harness was missing with that harness being spliced in. I wonder if whoever did all of that removed most of the black cloth tape and put the black plastic sheath on.

The first four pics are my original harness. The last pic is my new AAW harness.

Dave

My Original 69 rear harness is wrapped fully in a black type cloth tape. There is not a plastic sheath on it. I will say your new AAW is about as close to original as your going to get with an aftermarket.

My 68 also has the black plastic sheath covering the wire in the trunk running along the inner quarter panel, I am fairly certain is was original to my car.

Re: Rear light wiring harness wrapping ???

I guess that proves that the plastic sheath on my original harness might have come from the factory.

Can any other '68 owners comment on what their original harness covering was?

Thanks.....Dave

Hi Dave,

Definitely suppose to have the plastic sheathing. In fact, it runs clear from the trunk area all the way up under the sill and continues underneath the dash area. Here are a few pics of my '68 01D car.

Re: Rear light wiring harness wrapping ???

Thanks for all the replies so far.

Yesterday, I sent an e-mail (including pictures) to American Auto Wire asking why this harness did not come with the plastic sheath like the original. I've purchased three AAW harnesses, and with the exception of this one not having the plastic sheath, they are dead nuts identical to the originals.......When they reply, I'll post what they said.

I haven't researched this yet but does anyone know where you could buy plastic sheathing like this. I could put it right over the cloth tape. My original plastic sheath is cracked in a lot places but there might be enough good length to cover the visible part of the new harness in the trunk.

Dave

Dave,

Take a look at McMaster-Carr. They carry a whole bunch of sleeving.

Re: Rear light wiring harness wrapping ???

My replacement rear light harness, not from AAW, did not include the plastic cover either. I was able to reuse my original.

Re: Rear light wiring harness wrapping ???

I said I would report back on what I found out from American Autowire. What they told me was that they build their harnesses to the latest revision.

The person I talked to looked up this harness and it showed a GM revision to the harness covering that was made in March of '68. I believe what he was looking at didn't say specifically going from a plastic sheath to a tape wrap but it did show a change at that time and the GM blueprint they build their harness to calls for the tape wrapping.....Coincidentally, my car was built in March of '68.

I am curious if the folks who said their original '68 harness had the plastic sheathing, when your cars were built?.....and if anyone with a '68 built after March has the tape wrapping?

By the way, my original plastic sheath is beyond using and I did look up where to find something similar. There is all kinds of plastic wire sheathing out there but I didn't find anything like mine.
