Wiring Voltmeter - Where source?

I have a Spek Pro Voltmeter. One of its wires is to power the guage and another is for the source. Why can't I hook both of those wires up to the same thing? Instructions. The diagram shows the power coming from a keyed 12v ignition and the source coming straight from the battery, but my keyed 12v ignition is also coming from the battery. I have a painlessperformance wiring harness with a wire for "Voltmeter Source & Gauges B+ (power)". That one wire sounds like the two separate wires for my voltmeter gauge.

Thanks!

Re: Wiring Voltmeter - Where source?

I'm sure you can wire both to the same keyed source if you want. They most likely have the instructions like that because it's a digital gauge and the battery connection to the display portion is "dead" until the gauge turns on via the key on wire. It mentions that it has some memory functions. Will those work without a constant hot connection on the blue/source wire (similar to the memory functions on a car stereo if the BATT connection is dead)? I don't know. Also providing a separate key on supply and source supply lets you decide where you want to monitor voltage.
