talking about the one on the dash. my 68 rs switch controls the vacuum o.k., but the dimmer part doesn't work all that well. the dash lights are either a couple of stages of dim or just off, and if i turn it to the dome light position, the dash lights go off. pretty sure the rheostat is a little worse for wear. i'm digging into the interior to spruce things up a little, and was thinking of fixing the switch. everything but the dim feature works fine. my question is, has anyone successfully rebuilt one of these? i don't believe they are available through aftermarket, at least i don't recall seeing them. so any input would be appreciated, i'm sure i'll try it regardless. thanks in advance!

The switches are available for around $60.

15 years ago the RS styles were not available so I modified a standard switch. At that time the basic switch mechanism was the same so all that was needed was to put a slot in the top plate for the RS vacuum slide tab to fit it. The piece inside the switch that holds the tab was the same. The only thing cheesy is that the vacuum switch needs to be epoxied to the top plate.

You may be able to clean up the reostat with an eraser but if the circuitry is broken you will fight like mad to repair it. That's the reason I replaced mine after trying to fit it.

I don't remember the name, but it was just a standard auto parts store switch.
