Well, I took it out and tested it on the bench and of course it worked perfectly. I took the solenoid apart and cleaned the copper washer and the contacts, reinstalled and it works fine.
The 383 sounds just like the 350 did....maybe even a bit tamer. I'm still using the Hot cam - the only other real change was some port work on the heads and a performance valve job. I haven't driven it yet - weather permitting I'll drive it tomorrow.
I had a piece of crud in the needle/seat - feul came shooting out of the primary bowl vent and then it backfired...almost had to call the FD!!
Funny how stuff deteriorates just sitting around, isn't it?
