i know it isnt a camaro, but my 84 cutlass with 400 chevy acted up again. i made this post in engine and drivetrain on accident, s didnt get any replies. its a long one. Here it goes, strted fine yesterday morning, my power steering belt was squeling so, i shut it off to adjust it. Wen to start it again, and i was greeted to smoke coming off wires to starter. My solenoid wire is fine. I suspected it was a burntwire from hitting exhaust manifold so i cut out a part that looked bad, wires were showing from below fusible link, and wires got real soft. still smoking, so got a different starter and placed it on air cleaner, hooked up everything, smoke, it only smokes on the wire that goes from big positive post of starter to fusebox. Then i cut out teh fusible link and wired to starter, evrything works fine until key is on ignition, then it smokes, and i lose all power, headlights still work though. do you think the wire burned, then fried fusble link, now without fusible link, it just smokes my wire? thansk this sucks, i need to fix it bymonday, it is a 16 guage fusble link.

If it only smokes with the key on then you have a dead short to ground somewhere past the ignition switch. Check under the dash for discolored wires. Also check the wire that goes to the distributor. I'm assuming it has an HEI. When you find the short and repair it put a new fusible link on the starter wire. It's there for a reason.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
