How can I determind if the fuel gauge is bad or the sending unit is bad on a 68. Just bought the car and the gauge did not work. The pointer points to the 3 o-clock position with no movement. I don't want to remove the fuel tank if at all possibale.

If your fuel gauge is maxed out, check the ground connection at the tank.

Welcome to the site. You came to the right place for answers to these cars,there's a lot of knowledgable people here. Deejaygee is right, alot of people have grounding problems conerning the feul gauge. You could check it using resistors or a potentiometer. I believe it's range is 0-90 ohms. Do a search, it's been discussed many times. Maybe we'll run into one another somewhere, I live in Trenton. Every Wednesday we have a cruise-in on the west side of Hamilton at Golden Corral, come on out.

Extra-full can also mean the tan wire that goes to the sender is unhooked or broken.
