Wow!!! I put a new alternator in our 1997 Chevy 4X4 Z71 and it only took 15 minutes!! That also included time spent putting the tools away. Heck it only took one beer to do that job!!

How many miles did you get out of yours? Mine lasted 72000 miles. Water pump @ 45000 miles. Intake manifold gasket @ 79000. Leaking front axle 3 times, finally repaired @ 36000 miles. 2 bad A/C Delco batteries. Did I hit all the usual problem areas?

We bought this truck used in Feb. 2002 and it had 72,000 miles on it. Within 45 days after owning it the brake vacuum booster started leaking real bad and I replaced it myself. (another very simple fix)
Now at 101,000 miles the alternator died. My wife called me at work yesterday telling me the truck had this loud whining sound coming from it. I took the belt off and it quit. Put the belt back on it started the noise again. Also, the guage showed a low charge. Another clue was the alternator was so hot you could smell it.
We have a very slight oil leak from the connection for the engine oil cooler and I have not tried fixing it yet. It will only leave one drip on the driveway if we have been on a long trip. We never have to add any oil between changes (3,000 miles) so I am going to leave that alone until it is worse.
I am "knocking on wood" right now as to not jinx this!!

Oh, cost of vacuum booster $155.00
cost of alternator $189.00
core included
