I am the proud owner of an "84 Berlinetta. So far I have replaced the battery, battery cables, and the alternator and the car is still sitting in the driveway. The guy who tested my alternator (several times) saw that the screw where the wires hook up to the new alternator was melted and said that I probably have a short. I took my car to a mechanic (not an electrican) and he said he couldn't see any shorts. My car still starts and drives but the guage stays on 8 volts. if I charge the battery and put the headlights on then the radio you can see the lights dim out and the guage go down. So does anybody have any tips on what it might be? and whats the best way to find an ELECTRICAN that knows his wires?? thanks

The best (and most satisfying) way of fixing that little problem is to buy a Chiltons or Haynes manual for your car (available at most automotive stores) and track down the problem yourself. That way you know exactly how to fix it if it ever happens again. If you choose to leave it up to someone who is more experienced, just take it to someone who is knowledgeable about electronic and electrical wiring.
