I have a a mallory unilite on my 68 camaro (396 CU). I recently had to replace the distributor cap as the center button on the inside had snapped off. I don't know what I did, but after starting the engine and setting the timing, I switched the ignition key to the off position and the engine ran for a few seconds shutoff then wouldn't start. I looked at the distributor and found that the entire distributor had spun (this is with the hold down tightened) and wrapped the electrical wires from the ignition box around itself. On top of that there is a horizontal hole in the bright surface of the distributor housing. It is horizontal and oval shaped about 1/4 inch long. I've never seen anything like this. I'm wondering if there is an internal pin that has broken that is supposed to prevent the entire distributor from spinning while the engine is running. If this is the case, Is this repairable? Is the hole a critical item? (Anything to save $200) I haven't removed the distributor yet.
Any comments would be appreciated.
I'm planning on replacing the distributor tomorrow and installing a diode in the wire to the ignition switch to prevent "run-on" in the future.
