OK here it goes. My brother-in-law drove his '69 over today and when he went to go to the store about 30min after he arrived, it would not start. It was getting plety of fuel and cranking fine but just wouldn't fire. We pulled a plug and turned the key and no spark to the plug. It has a Mallory Unilite distributor and Mallory coil. We went and picked up a cheap coil from Autozone and it fired up so we put it back together and went for a cruise. About 10min later and at a stop light... it died. Well guess what, same spark! Now what??? Is it the module in the distributor? Bad coil? What else could it be?

Reads like the coil is overheating. I'd probably reread the Mallory installation instructions to make sure its wired correctly.

Is there suppose to be a ceramic (ballast) resistor in series the positive (+) post of the coil?

Go to the Mr. Gasket site ( ), click on the Mallory logo at the bottom of the page, and the Mallory pages have LOTS of downloads, including the wiring diagram instructions and a Unilite diagnostic test sequence.
