Hey guys, a few weeks ago, while using a wire cutter to remove a tie wrap near wires going into my 94 Amp alternator plug, I accidently shorted the positive output terminal to the alternator case. Created a nice spark. What are the potential damage scenarios. Today I noticed that my Spal fan seemed to be changing speeds with no change in engine rpm, and my electric temp gauge was reading way too high at highway speeds then would be back at 180F at a stop sign. No changes have been made to the cooling system. Time for a new alternator? I'm going to check the output voltage this afternoon......Scott

Probably zapped a diode. Good news is that diode trees are cheap. Take the alternator to a parts store for a bench test and purchase a new diode tree if it is in fact toast.

I checked the output voltage this afternoon and it was swinging from 15V to 20V and back. Sounds like I did some damage. The local NAPA guy is going check it out for me tomorrow.
