Stupid question, what is connected to the Sender post at the back of my Autometer volt guage?

Nothing, just use the right side post, which goes to an ignition 12 volt source and the top one for ground. Some people like to have this positive wire connected directly to the battery +, but that causes the volt meter to work constantly, unless you make a suitable circuit, using a relay.
