I bought a used HEI distributor a little over a year ago. It has one of the Accel HEI coils that mounts on top of the cap. The cap and rotor button were fairly new, but looked like the cheap kind. I had to pull the distributor this weekend to drop the transmission. I took the cap off, and it was fried inside !
The inside center of the cap was melted, the connector in the center of the cap was lying in the rotor button, and the metal clip on the rotor button that contacts the cap center was burnt off. I don't even see how the engine was running !

Do I just need to invest in a higher quality cap and rotor button, such as Accel, or is the coil supposed to run on less than 12V ? I don't have any of the papers that would come with the coil. Thanks, Ron.

I saw that once, the center contact "brush" was installed on top of the seal instead of under it.....of course, voltage jumped the gap and burned everything up.

Yes...the HEI is designed to run with 12 volts supplied.
