i need help bad i have a 350 first gen and i cant get it to start i tried everything, new starter battery,points cap plugs wires coil and even put in a gear drive and when i hook up the wire from the starter to the coil and turn the key the other wires gets hot and starts to smoke, also there should be 12 volts to the coil from the wire coming from the ignition switch right? please help am almost willing to take the loss. thanks

A couple of things you need to make sure of:

(New solenoid?)

The positive battery cable goes to the center stud on the solenoid.

The purple wire goes to the "S" terminal on the solenoid - closest to the engine block.

The yellow wire runs from the other solenoid terminal (closest to the pass fender) to the "+" side of the coil, along with the resistor wire which comes from the fuse block near the master cyl to the "+" side of the coil.
