On the charging system,
Monitor the blue wire at the alt plug, this should be the field voltage from the regulator. Shouldn't be more than 4 volts max.
Basically, what you are doing is full fielding the alternator, temporarily making the alt generate as much as 40-48 volts, just to warn you.
You may have to rev the engine up to 2500-3000 rpm to activate. Make sure the alt bulb works, as in comes on when IGN on, engine not running.
