I have an '84 Z28 thats had an engine change, I guess. Some say it's a 350, but I don't know. All the pollution equip. and most of the vaccuum lines have been stripped off. It's incredibly hard on gas, so I decided to replace everything so the computer would work. A guy told me instead to put the old style distributor(without the 4 wire computer lead) and eliminate computer. I know this does not meet emission stds but can someone tell me if he's right, and it will increase mileage as well cure some idling and slight overheating problems?? I hope so. Thx

If the distributor that's in now has the four wire plug the advance is controlled by the computer via the ESC module. If the computer isn't functioning properly you won't get any advance besides the initial. An early HEI with centrifugal and vacuum advance will cure it if you don't want the hassle of repairing the electrical system. These cars also had feed-back carbs on them that allowed the computer to trim the primary fuel metering. If the solenoid actuated metering rods are up all the time this could also make it run rich. If you can get everything working again it actually works fairly well. If you're concerned about emissions testing, fix it right the first time.
