Getting light from 68 AM radio

So I just bought a 68 AM radio for the dash in my camaro. It is a filler only and not going to be used but I would like the light to illuminate when the headlights are on. Does anyone have a write up or a link to a bulb and socket set that I can use for this to replace the old one? Thanks

Jeeze didn't you buy it yesterday? Thats fast shipping.
The light bulb can be replaced with LED, and you can use the full radio harness which includes a wire for illumination from the dimmer circuit (gray wire maybe?) Or just connect the gray up. Or hook your own harness lead to the light to the Instrument dimmer spade in the fuse panel to have the dimmer control the light.

Re: Getting light from 68 AM radio

So if I connect the wire on the bulb to the dimmer switch circuit do I then have to ground the radio? There's no ground from the light bulb socket.

Re: Getting light from 68 AM radio

Yes once the radio is installed the metal strap bracket on the unit completes the ground.

I believe the gray wire in the connector is dash light power.
So radio dial light should vary with dash lights as HEADLAMP switch is turned.

Re: Getting light from 68 AM radio

I'll have to find one of those radio straps (bracket) I'm missing that.

Re: Getting light from 68 AM radio

You can use a length of perforated strap as it would go from top of dash bracketry to pass side of radio at rear, U-nut should be there.
Radio power is a black w/yellow stripe and apparently dail light comes on with power applied from ign switch, my mistake.

Re: Getting light from 68 AM radio

Worth a look at your existing hanging harness. All cars came with them either used or taped up under the dash. They all included the dimmer instrumentation fed wiring.

So unless over the years someone installed an "over the counter aftermarket" radio and cut the plug off, but still gray lead should still be hanging and can easily be connected to the radio connector with a standard connector at any auto parts store. Sanyo's of the day used the gray light to blend in, Kenwood and Pioneer units of the made late 80's early 90's also had the ability to use dash instrumentation even when the radio was powered off.

Re: Getting light from 68 AM radio

I ordered the new pigtails, if I find the grey dimmer wire behind radio I'll just splice into it and then just ground under the dash somewhere.

Glad you got it going.

Were you able to find a gray wire behind the dash or did you wire into the fuse block ?.

Re: Getting light from 68 AM radio

There was a grey wire there, but I already had some gauges wired for light so I just taped into that instead.
