Has anyone ever put a tach and console gauges
in a car that didn't come with them. What problems arise besides coming up with the money to buy the stuff?

After you pull the wiring out of the dash you find more and more you want/need to do, clean, repair, replace, repaint ect. I have a bit of info on doing just that on a page: http://gvtc.com/~rlaa/Electrical/
Start with this one: http://gvtc.com/~rlaa/Electrical/ConnectP1.rtf

I have seen a post or two asking/inquiring about the installation of an original type tach. Try a search. Also, Rick's has a conversion type harness that allows you to hook up the console gauges without screwing with the dash harness. Good luck.

If you notice, I had to EDIT this entry. Upon confirming the entry I realized that I had not welcomed you to the team. So, welcome to the best site on the net. You'll learn something new everyday.
