got front clip off/put in new motor(old motor had points,switched to hei)..hooked up battery and purple wire to starter terminal closest to block.turned key to bump starter to get #1 piston up(to put in distributor)and nothing. I can get the starter to engage but only by jumping across silinoid.the purple wire is all i have on along with battery cables(ignition switch worked befor i pulled motor. I have never did points to hei swap befor....

First thing I'd check is the neutral safety switch. (Or clutch switch if you have a manual trans)

Any power on the BAT or IGN terminal on the fuseblock? Sounds like a wire didn't get hooked up when you put the front clip back on...or is it still off??

With the front lighting/generator harness disconnected, there is no power going to the ignition switch.

You'll have to run a full 12v wire to the HEI (12/14 ga.). The factory resistor wire won't work as good.

it will be some time befor i get the front clip on. i really want to hear the motor run. what can i do hook up a starter button?(think thats what it is called?)

Run a 12v wire from the Pos side of the batt to the "batt" terminal on your HEI. Get a remote starter switch. On the solenoid, clip one wire to the pos batt cable, the other to the terminal closest to the block. This should get you running.
