I have a chance to buy a guage cluster out of a 79 Z28 for my 78 camaro to replace the idiot lights. This comes with no sending units or wiring. Will this work, and what wiring changes do I need? Am I better off to try and get one from a junkyard with wiring and sending units? What all is involved in changing this out? Is this a nightmare?

Does GM sell all of the wiring stuff and sending units I need still? How much am I looking to spend? The cluster is $50, I can get a brand new cluster (unused) with all sending units and maybe wiring (maybe not, i forgot) for $250.

If I do go to a junkyard, will a trans am cluster be the same?

HELP!!!! I'm putting in a 400 small block so I really want to monitor my engine, esp. the water temp. I could go with the 30+ year old Stewart Warner guages that I have (unused if anyone wants to make an offer) but there is really no room to put them under the dash unless I want to fill in the non-functional A/C vent in the middle of the dash pad. The cluster will look 100% better than the other options, so I am leaning towards that.

Thanks,

Chuck

oh yeah, anyone know what years came with map pockets in the door panels? I'm searching for some.

Chuck, It is relatively easy to replace you clusters. I just put a 78 in my 70. You do not need any additional or different wiring. All that is required is to change where some of the wires plug into the connector. The only part I had to buy was a new single spade temp sending unit, about 8 bucks. I have a detailed set of instructions I will e-mail to you. Just be patient as I have to find them first. Remember the gage pod willl not have an oil gage. Why they left this out I don't know but I "hid" one on mine and just t'eed into the original sending unit so the idiot light would still work.

Okay. 79 and later clusters have the turn signals in a slightly higher location, so the $50 79 z28 cluster won't work unless I fabricate a new aluminum bezel for it. Good luck getting that to look right...

So now I'm looking at a 70 cluster with the 150mph speedo. I have a 130mph speedo now. Will this 70 cluster work in my 78? The turn signals at least look like they're in the right place.

here is a pic (hope it shows up):

and here is the 79:

Thanks,

Chuck

The 70 should work in your '78. At a minimum the guages can be interchanged from one pod to the next including the speedo if you want to retain your 78's odometer reading. Otherwise I like the 70 speedo as it is a 150mph and has no kilometer scale. If all else fails I have a '78 guage cluster I will send to you for cheap. i.e. $25 including shipping.
