I am upgrading my alt system and ran a wire for the Idiot light from the alt to the old brown wire. I used a wire that is one size smaller than the brown wire. Is this going to be a probblem? Will it give the alt the wrong voltage signal with the light?
Any help will be great.
Thanks, Matt.

Voltage will be the same until you reach the point of too much amperage for the wire, then voltage will decay. What is the load on the wire? If it is just the single light bulb for the idiot light, then it probably is about 10 watts which correlates to less than one amp at 12 volts. In that case, your wire is fine, because you could get by with even a smaller wire than say a 24 gauge wire, instead of the 18 or 20 gauge brown wire you are probably referring to.
