GEN light: Help me remember how it works.

An 'old guy' here that can't seem to remember...
On a 69, when you turn the key to the ON position, shouldn't the GEN light turn on???
(No factory gauges, only idiot lights)

I swear that's how it used to work, but now that I've replaced the under-dash wiring harness
with an AAW Factory Fit harness, I'm not so sure...

Everything else is working properly, but that light does not turn on...

Thanks.

Key on, engine off, GEN light on.
Engine running, VR places battery voltage on other side of GEN to turn off.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming...
