69 camaro dome light

Dome light had a melt down maybe due to resistance. How can I install a new light when the existing wires are so short?

Assume headliner is out? Follow the wires back and splice in new wire.

Re: 69 camaro dome light

I had the same issue due to the very hot conventional bulb in the light. I replaced the bulb with an LED equivalent that is way cooler and very bright - great change. I spliced extensions into the wires since they were so short and replaced the light escutcheon and lens since the original lens was partially melted.

Some LED bulbs are not true equivalents just based on size and shape, you need to read the fine print for output (candle power) and color (kelvin) and focus (beam angle). Most factory bulbs were 360 focus casting light everywhere, in a soft white 3100 kelvin. LED's can be specifically one way based on how the LED is mounted and the number of them.

The Dome lamp in Coupes was factory rated as 12 candles, bulb 211. Its knows as a Festoon base bulb sometimes called a bridge since it has contacts on both ends.

The following is a pretty good LED warm color replacement. There are brighter ones, but the color is too harsh blue for my tastes. Just remember when installing to turn the chips toward the floor and the circuit board toward the sky.

I changed out all my interior bulbs (except the instruments) with bulbs from the Superbright LED site for which the link was provided above. I don't recall what light temperature bulb I got, but it's plenty bright, but then I'd removed the old conventional bulb after it melted the lens on my light so it was nice to finally have a dome light.
