RS Back up Lights

Not sure if this is the correct forum or if it is body shop but here goes. Purchased RS back up light assemblies from Classic Industries. They are OER brand. Now, for the life of me I don't know what to think. These are complete assemblies but as far as I can figure out, there is no way to install them while intact. The Packard 56 connector wouldn't fit through the hole in the trunk floor and neither would the grommet. In addition, the right hand fixture had the grommet fixed in an upside down position so even if there was a way to install in one piece it still wouldn't work.

Just curious if anyone has seen this? Either way, I ended up cutting off the original ends, running the wire and placing the grommets in the right orientation. They would have been better off providing a bare wire with terminals to crimp.

Re: RS Back up Lights

Hey Tim, without going into my garage and looking at my 68 rs/ss I did a qick check on the CRG.org site. The rubber seal looks to be pushed into the holes from the bottom up into the trunk. That makes sense. Now with the connector, it appears in your pictures that the connector is about the same or a tiny bit smaller that the rubber seal. Could the holes in your trunk be gunked up or possibly a hair too small?

I suppose it is possible but still doesn't address why one grommet faced one direction and the other the opposite direction. I actually wondered if they plugged in from the bottom (thus keeping road spray out) but the reversal of direction threw me for a loop.

Re: RS Back up Lights

The internal connector can be removed from the connector housing using a small
flat blade or in some cases a pick. The connector without the housing will go through
the hole. Then snap the housing back on.

Thanks Al. That connector is a Packard 56 I believe and you're right, it will go through. I think I had the orientation incorrect but still a little confused why one of the grommets was on upside down but I'll figure it out.

Re: RS Back up Lights

Tim, on my 69 there were factory dimples on either side of the bumper bracing brackets( LS of left bracket & RS of right bracket) on the trunk floor where you have to drill down first. Once you drill the holes, I think 7/16" or 1/2" you have to fish the wire through with the terminal end up the tail panel reverse light opening upwards and pull the grommet to seal.
Check out post 5 in the link.

Don't forget you need a different wiring harness in the trunk for a RS reverse rear lights.
Hope this helps.
