Thumbs up Dash and taillights go out for a couple of seconds

So the dash and taillights go out while driving VERY RARELY, brakes lights and headlights are not affected. When they do go out its never longer than a couple of seconds. Recently they went out on a 60 mile trip once going and never coming back. This is typical, I can not replicate it- EVER. I'm thinking it could possibly be the switch but just a guess. It's so rare i have not bothered to fix it but I hate the little things like this happening. I would like to hear if anyone has had this happen and if they figured out the problem. I'll just replace the switch this winter if there is no one knows or has a test sequence to try and see what happens...all the wiring and grounds seem correct. Thanks guys!

Re: Dash and taillights go out for a couple of seconds

Loose connection at the taillight fuse holder is my first thought. In my head the dash lights are only affected because they are fed thru the tail lights. I'm not sure what the routing is between the tail light fuse and the dash lights to narrow down the section of the circuit to check. IMO if the problem was past that portion of the circuit the dash lights would not be affected only the tail lights.

Re: Dash and taillights go out for a couple of seconds

Power for the dash lights, parking lights, dome light, head lights and courtesy lights all come from the fused red wire at the light switch. So if the fuse holder was bad then I would expect all those lights to go out at the same time. But if only the dash lights and parking lights go out then most likely the light switch itself is bad.

Re: Dash and taillights go out for a couple of seconds

Thanks for the help, seems all roads lead back to the switch. I'll look at the fuse and pathway to and from the switch also best I can. I appreciate the feed back!!

Ran into a similar issue on a 69 Chevelle I used to own - Randomly the dash lights and taillights would shut off - End up being a loose ground under the dash, In my case the ground was connected either directly to or near the parking brake (cant remember for sure)

Re: Dash and taillights go out for a couple of seconds

I did check the ground wire and it appeared to be ok but I think I'll make sure the wire is not broken inside. That would be an easy fix. Thanks!
