Replacing Dash bulbs 1968

The dash lights are working but I think there are a couple of bulbs in the speedo and gas gauge that are out. Before I break my back is there any easy way to replace dash bulbs on a 68, also how many should I be looking for.

Re: Replacing Dash bulbs 1968

There is no easy way.... you can either scratch your arms to death reaching up there, or drop the column and pull the cluster.

The 68 gauge illumination is 4 bulbs. They are located in a staight horizontal line drawn thru the middle of the speedo and gas gauge. The other bulbs are for the idiot lights and turn signals.

These bulbs are available in 4 or 7 watts. The 4 watt are what the book called for. I replaced mine with 7 watt bulbs, they are much brighter, with no ill effects that I can tell.

Pulling the cluster and checking connections, replacing all the bulbs, and cleaning the pcb contacts sounds like a great Saturday project...lol.

Re: Replacing Dash bulbs 1968

Thanks Jim, I think I will do it the hard way. I will be using the 7 watt as well.
Thanks for the help.

Jim
Sweet Web site. Man - you dont' stop!!!

Quick question for you. Do you know the part number for the 7 watt bulbs? I've got P/N 194 in there now. You're using something different?? I'd LOVE to get some more light in my dash at night.

Jim, yes the site looks awesome. If you recall I am also a comcast customer, so I've been struggling w/creating a web site, they sure don't make it easy.

Anyway, where did you find the "simpleviewer", does it work well with FrontPage? I really like the way the photos 'pop out' at you when you load the page...especially since the pics are of a '68 Camaro convertible!
I've also wanted to put up a history of my (mis)fortunes with classic cars over the years (sounds like I'm about the same age as you, I turned 40 in 1999). I just haven't gotten around to it yet but I have lots of scanned photos ready to go... Terry M.

Re: Replacing Dash bulbs 1968

Dan, I don't know the part # for the 7 watt bulbs... my Napa guy suggested them, he drives a 67 and knows all about speedo's you can't hardly see. He had to look them up tho, in the front of the light bulb book, they have a cross reference by type, and they were in there, right under the 194's.

Terry, and anyone else, the simplerviewer flash appl. I used on my reborn page is right here: http://www.airtightinteractive.com/simpleviewer/ It is free, and very easy to deal with. You put big photos in one folder, your thumbs (same name) in another, then plug the names in a text file. You can also put captions in for each photo, they'll fade in and out too. I didn't use that yet, but I'm gonna do a how-to on swapping heads, and I'll use it there.
Once it's done, it all goes into a folder, the folder goes into your website, and you link to an html file in that folder. Frontpage doesn't mind it a bit.

I've been working on the interior, slowly. Got both kick panel speakers in now, used 4x6 "plate speakers" from Infinity, a 4" and a 1" tweeter on a 4x6 plate. They fit in the kick panel like they were born there, the repro grills fit on em perfect, and they sound great. I'll be at it some more tonight. Don't think it will ever be dome....lol. Not sure I want it to be, hehe! always something.
