gen light on

My gen light came on in my '67 and I found out my alternator was bad. I replaced the alternator, voltage regulator, and the battery and my generator light is still on. It goes out when I give it gas but once the car slows down it comes on again. Anything in particular that would make this happen?

Re: gen light on

I tried to make sure the alternator belt was as tight as possible when I put it on, and the alt looks the same with a red wire for battery, plus the plug with the blue wire and the white wire. The back of the alt has two prongs for that plug, so it must be a 3 wire alt.

Re: gen light on

Are you sure it was the alternator that is bad? a voltage regulator can cause the same problem if it's stuck. You may want to replace the voltage reg. and see what happens. It's not a very costly part. Around $12 here.

Re: gen light on

Since you said you already replaced the alt., reg., and battery you might want to check the connections at the horn relay. Make sure they're clean and tight. If there's a wire that goes to the + battery terminal from the horn relay check that too. My '69 has a junction block on the radiator support near the battery. Also if you've added any high amp draw accessories, like a high power stereo with a power amp, your alternator might not be able to keep up with it at idle.

Re: gen light on

I cleaned the terminals of the horn relay and I unplugged the voltage regulator plug to try cleaning the terminals and I found a wire that was broken inside the insulation. It was the red battery wire. I replaced the wire and the light is out now.
