amp gauge dropping???

I bought a 68 camaro about a month ago, and have had this problem since day one. When no electrical components are on the amp meter is straight up (what I'd consider about normal). However, when I back out of the driveway and touch the brake pedal, the meter drops all the way down to "0". I let my foot off the brake and it goes back up. It also drops when I turn on the headlights, or when the stereo is on.

The car has sat for about a week in between driving it, and I've driven at one time for about 1.5 hours which shows the battery is maintaing a charge.

I am just trying to determine why the amp meter moves so much, and if the problem lies with the guage, alternator, or how it was wired.

I tried a search, but couldn't any thing in past threads.

Thanks for the help!

Re: amp gauge dropping???

What kind of amp gauge, factory or aftermarket? Its moving because of voltage drop. If its a factory gauge wired correctly, it shouldn't move much, it only shows the battery's charging rate. If its a aftermarket gauge, depending on how its wired, it may show all of the cars current draw. Would need to know type of gauge and how its wired to give a better answer.

Re: amp gauge dropping???

The gauge is a console gauge, similar to what you'd buy from say Ricks as an OEM replacement console gauge. I am not sure on the exact brand, and I will have to check out the wiring. What am I looking for in the way of how its wired??
